Don't follow your passion

Updated: Aug 23, 2023

With the pandemic, Great Resignation, quiet quitting and all the different stages of grief we have experienced over the last few years, I encounter entrepreneurs and young professionals on a regular basis who leave their jobs or businesses because they "no longer enjoy it". Some say they must “follow their passion” which I have no issues with.

For those who question those approaches, this is for you as I belong to the school of thought, driven home by Mark Cuban, and say "follow our effort".

Let's be honest, very few of us give time and effort to our passions such that we can make an honest living out of it. For instance, singing may be your passion, but will you put in the hours and the effort and still feel so passionate about it such that you will be successful?

When I started out as an employee, I did a lot of things I didn't like but I did them because they were necessary for my growth and development. I once worked at a firm where even my employment letter showed my resumption time but there was no closing time! So I worked round the clock until my boss said we could "go home". But I put in the effort and now I get to do things I enjoy.

I understand that everyone's journey and circumstances are unique. Some individuals may find fulfillment and success by aligning their work with their passions from the beginning, while others may need to navigate a different path to eventually reach a point where they can pursue their passions. Ultimately, the approach that works best for an individual depends on their values, aspirations, and personal circumstances.

However, I truly believe you have to earn the right to do what you love, and you are not going to love everything. Wherever you are now in your journey, that’s fine; but why not want more and dream bigger? Then find out where you want to be and reverse engineer the process. Follow your effort. Davidson.
