In one of my recent TEDx talks, I quoted America’s 33rd President (#POTUS 33), Harry Truman, who said it’s amazing what you can achieve provided you don’t mind who gets the credit.
That statement rings true most times when you look around and see companies struggling under failed leaders who will not utilise the best hands at their disposal simply because they want to take all the credit for the work being done.
If that is your leadership style then you may never succeed or run a successful organization because the head winds you will face in life are strong and varied. For instance, you might be a visionaire brimming with amazing insights but you lack operational skills. You may also have fantastic operational skills but your financial acumen is subpar.
Imagine being a great striker on a football team and then trying to do it all by yourself. Some of us may think about one or two players who turned up at the recently concluded World Cup with that attitude. Against 11 players on the other side, you will lose repeatedly.
Running a business is a team sport. It may not always matter who scored the goals. What ultimately matters is that the team won the trophy at the end.
